The City of Rawlins and the Urban Deer Committee want to thank the Wyoming Game and Fish Department, the Rawlins Police Department and community volunteers who assisted in the 2020 cull and meat distribution. Twenty-eight Rawlins residents who applied received venison on Saturday, January 2nd. Sixty-six applications for venison were received and were selected via lottery.
Thirty-one deer were culled in 2020 under the Urban Deer Management Plan and the Wyoming Game and Fish Department’s Chapter 56 Permit. Selected officers from the Rawlins Police Department completed the culling at safe locations on public property. Culled deer were taken to a storage facility, where they were field dressed by volunteers, with samples sent to Wyoming Game and Fish labs to be tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). Volunteers were trained by the Wyoming Department of Game and Fish in removing the glands sent in for testing. Three deer tested positive for CWD.
